Floods in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh 2025

About Us

Overview of the Disaster

In early July 2025, Mandi district, located 133 km north of Shimla in Himachal Pradesh, was devastated by floods and landslides triggered by heavy monsoon rainfall. Reports indicate that 11 cloudbursts and 4 flash floods occurred within 15 hours, causing significant loss of life and property. According to various sources, at least 4–10 people were killed, with 16–34 reported missing in Mandi alone. The Beas River overflowed, exacerbating damage to infrastructure, including a hydroelectric power project, a bridge, and a national highway. Over 370 individuals have been rescued, but 12 remain stranded, and forecasts of heavy rain until July 7, 2025, continue to challenge operations. Mandi recorded 253.8 mm of rainfall in a short period, contributing to the severity of the flooding.

Aftermath of the Floods

The floods have displaced numerous families, destroyed homes, and disrupted critical infrastructure, with damages across Himachal Pradesh estimated at 33 million U.S. dollars. Environmental experts highlight that deforestation and unregulated construction in ecologically sensitive areas have amplified the disaster’s impact. A 2025 geospatial study noted that over 45% of Himachal Pradesh is highly susceptible to landslides and floods due to its terrain and ecological vulnerabilities. The state government issued a high alert on June 26, 2025, and the ongoing monsoon threat underscores the urgent need for enhanced disaster preparedness, including early warning systems and sustainable land-use policies.
